Hola amigos!
This month, let’s dive into a delightful treat known as brigadeiros. If you’re new to this Brazilian delicacy, prepare yourself for a taste experience like no other. Brigadeiros aren't just snacks; they are an embodiment of Brazilian culture and community. Though popular in Brazil, they remain a hidden gem in the U.S. I'm excited to share why they are cherished and the fascinating story behind their origins.
This month of May I am launching a line of cookies with different flavors of brigadeiros embedded in them. Each of the new flavors are $8 each and promise to bring you to a land of tropical fruit, rich flavors and summer time beaches.

What Is a Brigadeiro?
A brigadeiro (pronounced bree-gah-DAY-ro) is a rich chocolate truffle that melts in your mouth. Made from sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter, these little bites are rolled in chocolate sprinkles for a delectable finish. What sets brigadeiros apart is not just their unique flavor but also the countless variations. For instance, you might encounter brigadeiros topped with crushed pistachios, filled with creamy dulce de leche, or even rolled in colorful, whimsical sprinkles to add a playful touch.

These delightful treats are more than just desserts; they are woven into the fabric of Brazilian celebrations. At an average Brazilian birthday party, it’s common to see trays filled with brigadeiros. They are so beloved that 90% of Brazilian households include them in their festive gatherings. Their smooth, melt-in-your-mouth consistency paired with the crunchy exterior makes them hard to resist. In fact, once you have one, it’s nearly impossible to stop at more!
A Sweet Treat with a Political Past
The name “brigadeiro” has a charming backstory, reminiscent of how teddy bears got their name from President Teddy Roosevelt. Brigadeiros were first created in 1945 during the presidential campaign of Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, a charismatic Brazilian Air Force brigadier. His supporters sold these sweets as “docinhos do brigadeiro” (brigadier’s little candies) at campaign events to raise funds.

Although Gomes did not win the election, the brigadeiro gained nationwide fame and has been a party staple ever since. This treat has become a symbol of unity and joy in Brazilian culture, marking special moments in life—whether at children's birthdays or holiday celebrations.
My Personal Connection to Brazil (and Brigadeiros)
While I am from Ecuador, I hold a special connection to Brazil. My father served as the Ecuadorian ambassador to Brazil during my teenage years, allowing me to explore Brasília from age 13 to 15. It was there that I fell in love with Portuguese and the vibrant flavors of Brazil, especially brigadeiros.
In Brasília, small shops and cafés offered their unique takes on brigadeiros. I fondly remember them served in cheerful little paper cups, showcasing their glossy finish and bright toppings. The rich chocolate aroma was always in the air, an unforgettable part of my experience.
Years later, after I moved to Colorado and started Alma Baking House, creating brigadeiros was my first idea. I wanted to share this joyful treat with those who had never tasted it. I experimented with traditional recipes as well as innovative twists—such as coconut-flavored brigadeiros and passion fruit variants. Each creation takes me back to the sun-drenched streets of Brasília.
